The origins of coffee
The Jinotega region of Nicaragua is located in the north of the country. It is renowned among travellers and hikers for its beautiful landscape, characterised by frequent fog and rich cloud cover. It is no wonder that Jinotega has earned the nickname Ciudad de la Brumas, or City of Fog. The city is surrounded by several mountain ranges, crossed by a network of small and large streams, and the popular Lake Apanas, a wetland of UNESCO international importance.
As for coffee, Jinotega is one of the largest producers not only in Nicaragua but in the region. The coffee trees are mainly grown by farmers at altitudes between 800 and 1 500 metres, usually on terraces that help to conserve moisture and reduce soil erosion. The climate there is particularly favourable for the plants - days are warm and sunny, nights are cool. Rainfall is abundant in the region and the soil provides coffee plants with adequate nutrients.
In the case of Nicaragua Los Altiplanos - Java Lavado BIO, we must mention the farm's unique history. It was founded in the 1930s by a Scot named Potter. Decades later, this man decided to return to his homeland and sold the farm. In the 1980s, the state confiscated it. And it was only in the early 21st century that the plantation was returned to private ownership. Ricardo Cuadra Fajardo visited Finca Los Altiplanos, fell in love at first sight and bought it.
This is no doubt due to its location - the farm is in the middle of the Datanlí El Diablo nature reserve, and the coffee bushes grow in the shade of the huge trees of the native forest. In particular, these are beautiful specimens of the so-called guaba (Inga edulis), trees that can grow up to 30 metres tall and symbiotic with nitrogen-fixing bacteria and fungi in the soil. This is very important for the healthy growth of coffee trees. Grown in the middle of a nature reserve, the coffee is nothing short of special. Nicaragua Los Altiplanos - Java Lavado BIO captivates the taste buds with its delicate body, mild acidity and notes of dried fruit, spices, nuts and marzipan. The owner of the farm, Ricardo Cuadra Fajardo, takes exemplary care of both the coffee trees and the entire area around the plantation. The results are clear. Place of origin:
